Why Laptops Are Killing the Club Scene

Watch a DJ set from twenty years ago. They are mixing with vinyl. Two turntables, a mixer, and a crate of records. If they made a mistake, everybody heard it.

Watch a DJ set now. Laptop. Controller. Sync button. The computer does the beatmatching. The DJ presses play and dances.

Something was lost. The craft of mixing records by ear took years to learn. You had to know your music. You had to feel the tempo. You had to listen.

Sync is convenient. It lets DJs focus on selection instead of technique. That should be a good thing. But it also means anybody with a Spotify playlist can call themselves a DJ.

The best clubs still book DJs who do it the hard way. Not because vinyl sounds better. Because those DJs know their music better. They have put in the hours.

Technology is not the enemy. But relying on it completely makes you lazy. Learn to beatmatch by ear. Learn your records. Then use the technology as a tool, not a crutch.
